Hi EAs! ❤️
I am excited to announce that Legal Impact for Chickens (LIC) has achieved a major win in a court case: California's Humboldt County Superior Court just ruled that LIC's cruelty lawsuit can proceed against well-known dairy operation Alexandre Family Farm, which supplies Whole Foods and other large grocers.
California has a law against animal cruelty and neglect—which extends to farmed animals. But the fact that prosecutors rarely enforce cruelty laws against the powerful corporate interests that control animal agriculture leads some people to falsely believe that animal agriculture is above the law.
The court's order determined that LIC's cause of action, enforcing the cruelty law against an agricultural operation, is valid. The court ruled that an organization like LIC can directly sue companies for cruelty. The organization needn't pass any additional bar for standing.
We're excited to move forward with the facts stage of the case. And we hope other California-based organizations will start to bring other cases like this for farmed animals, too.
Thank you to everyone in the EA community who helped make this win happen in various ways. Thank you for launching and believing in LIC. ❤️❤️❤️
Sincerely,
Alene & LIC
This is so exciting! Congratulations and thank you for your amazing work on this issue. Surviving the motion to dismiss is a big deal and I'm excited to see what possibilities this opens up.
