Hello all. My name is Rory. Over the past few weeks I have been setting up a non-profit: Mission to Protect Intelligent Life. You can check out the preliminary version of our site at <<mpil.life>>.

This has been a very long time coming for me and I have been waiting for the right moment to fully commit to starting my own initiative. I have been part of the existential risk community for around five years, but I have never really been an outspoken member except within closed groups. I hope that you will accept the Mission to Protect Intelligent Life as we start to be more and more active.

If you are interested, please take a look at the website. You will see some information about the approach of MPIL and what we are all about - including the rationale behind the protection of intelligent life specifically. I'll point you also to our "operational structure" - represented graphically on the website - which shows how the organisation will (aim to) approach existential risk-reducing activities.

MPIL is just starting out and we are hoping to grow quickly, partly due to our unique operational structure.  We leverage subject matter experts (SMEs, eventually will be paid positions) who are verified specialists in their domains and who dip in and out of various MPIL projects to review/audit the work at every step of the way. Then there are "contributors," who need not be experts, but rather just keen minds who have an interest in the topic. Contributors do specific, packaged tasks which have a well-defined input, process and output. They contribute chunks of projects, similar to open-source software development. Contributor positions are voluntary, but soon we would like to be able to offer useful rewards such as university credits, formal certifications, awards, small compensation packages or similar.

Our exact workflow is subject to change as we move through the teething pains and work out how to optimise our efforts. In the meantime, we are looking for subject matter experts and contributors to register interest in our first project, whose overview can be found here. If you would like to get involved, apply there.

Other relevant information:

  • We are approaching our governance strategy very carefully. We would like to have a setup whereby the core team of the organisation is geographically-distrubuted evenly and has a range of backgrounds and skills - we want maximum entropy!
  • We are looking for partners, funders, or anything that can help us to get going.
  • If you wish, you can donate to MPIL in Euros or with any cryptocurrency. See the "Donate" page.
  • You can contact us privately here, but we/I welcome your thoughts and suggestions on this post so that we may have a group discussion...

We are all united by a common goal to make a positive impact on our most pressing issues - so let's work together!
