The importance, tractability and neglectedness framework (ITN framework) is a framework for estimating the value of allocating marginal resources to solving a problem based on its importance, tractability, and neglectedness. The significance, persistence and contingency framework (SPC framework) is a framework for estimating the instrumental value of historical or future events.
In this post, I propose a framework for the evaluation of interventions called FIX IT GENTLY. The full mnemonic, FIX IT GENTLY, DOABLE COSTS, GENERAL & LAST, SCALE & SPEED breaks down the key considerations when evaluating an intervention into memorable phrases:
🔨 FIX IT GENTLY:
- FIX: Represents the effect size of the intervention (how well it works).
- GENTLY: Acknowledges the possibility of negative messages or unintended consequences associated with the intervention.
$ DOABLE COSTS:
- DOABLE: Is a reminder of the importance of the intervention being feasible to implement (difficulty).
- COSTS: Refers to the cost-effectiveness of the intervention compared to its benefits.
🚗 GENERAL & LAST:
- GENERAL: Represents the generalisability of the intervention, whether its benefits can be expected for a broad population.
- LAST: Refers to the long-term effects of the intervention, how long the benefits last.
🪜 SCALE & SPEED:
- SCALE: Refers to the scale on which the intervention can be delivered
- SPEED: Represents the scalability of the intervention compared to other options, how quickly it can be implemented on a larger scale.
The concepts are vague and difficult to understand. It seems that more evidence-based research is needed.
