Briefly:

It is a low-cost intervention for members of military families to speak to the veterans in their family, in support of an action they can take with personal value to the recipient, as well as a strong political and cultural message:

"Adopt an Afghani girl, before the Taliban gets to her."

The value of HOPE is also important to recognize. That is the same reason why we devote so many resources toward people trapped in collapsed buildings - because each of us knows that, should the whole house fall down on us, we NEED that HOPE that someone will come looking. If, in callous and short-sighted utilitarian mode, we said "it's not cost-effective to clear rubble for victims," then, naturally, EVERYONE in any building will experience additional anxiety, continually - "If we have an earthquake, NO ONE is coming for us." That is atrocity, hope is the antidote.
