Morality is Objective

  1. I don't think the universe itself cares about morality and what we do -- so, in this sense, no, probably not objective
  2. But I also despise the notion that anyone can just come up with a value system where forced female genital mutilation (don't ask) is ok. Just no. Fuck that system. I think it's a reasonable approximation that there is some value system that is the ideal "true" one for all humanity and we have been moving closer to it through history. In this sense, I think there is (to a good approximation) an intersubjective system / an "objective" system for humanity.
  3. (We can also make an argument from moral uncertainty that if there is no objective morality, it basically doesn't matter what we do. But if there is, it matters a lot since we are gaining/losing utils with our actions. So, even if there is a relatively small chance of objective morality existing, it's still worth to act as if objective morality exists -- which, I think, means you should act on your best guess of what the objective morality is.)

Thank you for the view! While I do agree with this and I'm definitely not giving up on the EA ideals, I don't think this actually helps to solve the problem that nowadays, it can be highly problematic to simply promote these ideas using their real name.

This stems from a problem with the movement, not the ideas, but it hurts the ideas as well.

I have already had several experiences when someone knew about EA, but they had a very poor and strongly negative understanding of it, which made them reject the discussion or cooperation from the start.
