Givewell

With anticipated major reductions in US government foreign aid, including potential cuts of 20% to 50% to HIV/AIDS funding, GiveWell is assessing where new, cost-effective needs might emerge. In the latest episode of its podcast series, GiveWell CEO and co-founder Elie Hassenfeld speaks with Program Officer Alice Redfern about an initial exploration into HIV/AIDS programming. Subscribe for the latest updates, or read a summary of key takeaways on the GiveWell blog.

GiveWell recently made grants to Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. and PATH to create technical support units in six African countries navigating substantial funding gaps due to cuts in US government aid. The TSUs will help governments manage the funding transitions and maintain essential health services. Listen to a recent podcast episode exploring the impact of these grants.

Good Food Institute

GFI published the 2024 State of Alternative Protein series, a leading source of insights and analysis on the alternative protein sector. It includes three State of the Industry reports for plant-based, cultivated and fermentation-enabled proteins, a State of Global Policy report, and a new State of Alternative Proteins report. Together, these reports are global guides for the entire industry to look back at progress and look forward to where the field might be heading.

GFI Europe, in collaboration with Green Alliance and The Food Foundation, launched a set of policy recommendations on plant-based foods at a UK Parliament event. The joint report, Low Hanging Fruit, includes a proposal for a £30 million plant-based innovation fund.

GFI APAC’s Alternative Protein Career Pathways tool was chosen as an honoree in the 2025 Webby Awards — hailed as the “internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times. This resource, which includes interactive career maps, job archetypes, and a comprehensive list of local training opportunities, helps recent graduates and mid-career professionals contribute to building the future of food.

After two years of engagement with the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology, GFI’s Policy team celebrated the Commission’s landmark final report addressing the urgent need for renewed US leadership in biotechnology. The report highlights increasing vulnerabilities within our food supply chains and calls for an investment of $15 billion over the next five years to drive R&D, commercialization, and economic growth.

GFI’s latest Alt Protein Pipelines webinar showcased Brown University’s Alt Protein Project (APP), a chapter of GFI’s global college chapter program, and the launch of Brown University’s first-ever for-credit alternative protein class. Brown APP student and faculty leaders leveraged GFI’s open-access resources to initiate the course and explored tangible use cases for integrating GFI’s resources into new and existing educational pathways.

GFI launched its 2024 Year in Review to recap the progress it made over the past calendar year.

Happier Lives Institute

HLI’s Dr Michael Plant spoke to Inside Philanthropy about happiness, highlighting the approach of measuring charitable impact through wellbeing metrics.

HLI has highlighted two standout charities working to eliminate childhood threats, Pure Earth and Taimaka, both meeting rigorous standards for cost-effectiveness and measurable impact.

Explore the research and reasoning behind HLI’s recommendations.

The Humane League

In May, 13 companies reported on their cage-free commitments to spare 2.4 million hens in their supply chain. Based on the progress these companies made, THL estimates they spared 350,000 hens from cages last year. Three companies, Viking Cruises, Groupe Holder, and White Castle, achieved 100% cage-free.

In addition, THL hosted a campaign accelerator for Open Wing Alliance member groups in Asia, equipping members of their coalition dedicated to ending cages globally with the tools and strategies they need to make progress in this critical region, where 62% of the world’s hens live.

New Incentives

New Incentives shared a photo blog capturing a day of immunizations at a clinic in Kebbi, Nigeria. The blog highlights the triumphs and challenges faced by clinic staff and caregivers alike.

Open Philanthropy

Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna, Open Philanthropy’s main funders, were featured on TIME’s list of the 100 most important people in philanthropy.

Open Philanthropy has announced the new leader of its Abundance and Growth Fund, Matt Clancy, and of its Economic Growth in Low- and Middle-Income Countries program, Justin Sandefur.

Recent blog posts by Open Philanthrophy’s teams and staff include:

80,000 Hours

80,000 Hours completed its spin-out from Effective Ventures and announced their new board members.

80,000 Hours published a blog post on why AGI might still be decades away.

On the 80,000 Hours Podcast, Rob interviewed:

●       Beth Barnes on the most important graph in AI right now — and the 7-month rule that governs its progress

●       Tyler Whitmer on why you should not believe OpenAI's "nonprofit" spin

They also released a compilation episode on non-human consciousness, including insects, AI, and more.

Anima International

Anima International has published a blog article detailing its movement-building initiatives in Central Asia and the Caucasus. It outlines the local animal advocacy landscape and shares insights from working with groups in Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan.

In Norway and Denmark, Anima International continued to pressure key companies to stop using fast-growing chickens. Norway’s demonstration highlighting this issue focused on McDonalds. In Denmark, Anima demonstrated with a 16 ft. high inflatable chicken in front of the retailer Coop’s annual members assembly, encouraging them to vote for change.

The Polish team is intensifying the fight for a fur farming ban as the new president’s election may lead to de-prioritizing animal welfare legislative proposals. Their huge billboard in Warsaw appealed to politicians to accelerate the ban proposal introduced last year and they also took part in several parliamentary meetings to discuss the issue with MPs.

Anima International’s UK branch was among the five organizations that delivered 1.5 million petition signatures to the British Prime Minister, calling for a ban on fur imports and sale. Fur farming was banned in the country over 20 years ago, but imports contribute to stalling progress in countries such as Poland, where 3.5 million animals are killed for fur annually.

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE)

ACE are asking those who engage with their research and recommendations to complete a short survey that will shape the organisation’s efforts going forwards. Take the survey by June 30th.

Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA)

CEA’s Groups Team have opened applications for OSP Fall 2025.

  • The Organiser Support Programme (OSP) is a remote program run by CEA to help make organising an EA group easy, accessible and effective. With a likelihood to recommend score of 9.1 out of 10, our programmes have supported over 300 organisers from across every populated continent.
  • We’re welcoming applications from university groups, and (new!) city or national groups.
  • For new organisers, OSP aims to equip you with everything you need to run a group, and make organising an EA group achievable, accessible and effective.
  • For continuing organisers, OSP aims to help you reach the next level — whether that’s by doubling the number of group members, running your first post-intro programming or helping members find opportunities.

Unsure about your fit?

  • Many great organisers were unsure of their fit. If you have >20 hours of engagement with EA and might be interested in running a local intro fellowship, we encourage you to apply!

“I believe the group wouldn't even exist [without OSP]! But if it had, I estimate it would have been around 5 times less impactful.”
– João Lucas

Apply as a participant by Sunday June 22nd at 11:59 PM (AoE).

Apply as a mentor by Wednesday June 18th 11:59 PM (AoE).

Faunalytics

A new study from Faunalytics and Good Growth Co. combines a literature review with social media analysis (“social listening”) across six Southeast Asian countries. It identifies which audiences are most open to plant-based diets, what influences their food choices, and which messages resonate most. With insights specific to Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the research gives advocates tools to fine-tune their strategies and make a greater impact for animals.

Faunalytics has also released a new report exposing how USDA subsidies are mostly going to massive, politically connected animal agriculture companies. These grants are funding things like multimillion-dollar processing facilities for companies run by billionaires — all under the pretence of “promoting competition”.

Fish Welfare Initiative

Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is launching a new outcome evaluation of its farm programme in India to assess to what extent it is succeeding in improving water quality for farmed fishes. It also published a recap of its first Innovation Challenge on satellite-based water quality monitoring, and announced a second round with a top prize of $100,000.
