I recently posted this on the EA subreddit and was recommended to ask here (and am very surprised I've found so little info about legal careers on here!)

I am currently in my first year of law school and am trying to figure out what area of law I want to practice. I'd really like to do something impactful by EA standards, so I'd love to hear ideas of what (realistic/attainable) types of law careers might be best for that. This isn't my only way of exploring careers, I am interested in appellate work and science/technology law so looking into those areas, just want to also look from a lens of impact in addition to interest. My undergrad degree is in philosophy, but I was a chemistry major for 3.5yrs of college so am most likely patent bar eligible through category B.

I am located in New England and plan to stay in the area, and would like to find opportunities that are realistically attainable for someone at a T125 law school with a pretty lackluster resume so far; something like international human rights law is probably not going to happen for me. Would love any advice/thoughts!

Honestly, earning to give is a really strong option. If you can get into a boutique patent firm, make good money, and donate, this may be a very strong way to go. With your lackluster resume and unimpressive law school, the patent bar might be the best way to go.

The field of law is extremely gated by prestige, including public interest work in many areas. The patent route might be a way through what would otherwise be a pretty unfortunate situation.

And first year grades are extremely important, especially if you are at a less prestigious school. I would recommend focusing on that for your first year to the exclusion of just about everything else.

Best of luck!

Have you considered talking to Legal Impact for Chickens and other animal welfare groups that sue companies for faulty advertising on their welfare, environmental, etc. standards?
