Headline Sessions
AGI in 2032, Not 2027: What 2025 taught us about AGI timelines — Benjamin Todd (80,000 Hours)
When will transformative AI arrive? The answer shapes everything—which problems to prioritise, which careers to pursue, how much time we have to prepare. Ben co-founded 80,000 Hours in 2011 and built it into one of the most influential organisations in EA. His TED talk has been viewed over 5 million times. In this session, he'll examine the range of forecasts for advanced AI development and what the implications are for how we should act today.
Running One of the World's Most Effective Charities — Sarah Bouchie (Helen Keller International)
A fireside chat with the CEO of one of GiveWell's top charities. HKI distributed over 87 million vitamin A capsules in 2024. A single capsule costs just over $1 and can prevent blindness and death. Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, Sarah leads an organisation that operates at the intersection of rigorous standards and massive scale.
The conversation will explore what it takes to maintain both—how you preserve high standards whilst delivering interventions across 20 countries, how you work with governments and communities to implement life-saving programmes, and what the global health landscape looks like from inside one of EA's flagship recommendations.
Innovation, Economics, and Effective Altruism — Arthur Baker (Development Innovation Lab)
How do you turn an insight from an economics paper into a programme that reaches 150 million children? Arthur is Chief of Staff to Michael Kremer, one of the 2019 Nobel Prize winners in Economics. Kremer's research on school-based deworming led him to co-found Deworm the World.
Sentience in Insects: Evidence and Implications — Bob Fischer (Rethink Priorities)
If insects can suffer—and trillions are affected by human activity annually—could we be overlooking one of the largest sources of preventable suffering? Bob led Rethink Priorities' Moral Weight Project, which Peter Singer called "truly ground-breaking." This is the sort of question that sounds too strange for most audiences, but the EA movement takes seriously: following the evidence wherever it leads, even when it's uncomfortable or counterintuitive.
Seriously Happy: How The New Science of Wellbeing Means We Can Measure What Matters — Michael Plant (Happier Lives Institute)
What if measuring happiness directly could reveal that the best charities are roughly 1,000 times more impactful than others? Michael founded the Happier Lives Institute after speaking at an EA Netherlands event in 2018. His research now appears in the World Happiness Report.
