Thank you, Anita, for opening this much-needed conversation. I think your letter invites us to rethink how EA approaches animal well-being and, importantly, what we count as success. Alongside improvements in living conditions, we should ask whether an intervention reduces the number of animals bred into the food system and how it affects planetary health. Animals spared from exploitation, climate impacts, land and water use, and biodiversity deserve a place in that assessment.
In our work with cities and universities in Spain, I see how this broader ambition can translate into practical changes in procurement, menus, and access to plant-based meals. I’d love to see more funding support these pathways, with success metrics that capture their benefits for animals, people and the ecosystems we all depend on.
It was a pleasure to be part of the team of experts drafting the report! Now, the work is on our communities and on individuals to make small but powerful changes in their choices. And, of course, the action is also on the funding organizations that have the political and economic power to promote the necessary dietary and production shifts we must address for a flourishing future for humans, non-human animals, and the more-than-human world! ✨🌱
