Hi everyone! I'm Nicholas, based in the United States. I've been a lurker here and on LessWrong for a long time, but I wanted to finally sign up so that I could share some of my ideas, get feedback from others, and participate in the conversations.
My main areas of interest here are moral philosophy, extinction risks, and coordination problems - how to get people to work together for the common good. I have a background primarily in the history of philosophy (my main area of specialty is ancient philosophy, and especially Plato and Aristotle), and a lot of my own work is around the foundations of moral and practical philosophy: universal questions like why we should be moral, what makes an action moral or immoral, what happiness is, etc. But I'm also interested in questions about the particular moral concerns of our own time and place, like AI extinction risk, global warming, factory farming, and the erosion of democratic norms.
I also work on other areas of philosophy like epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophical psychology, but here I’ll mostly stick to moral questions and the practical questions which relate to them directly.
