BlueDot Impact’s free AI Governance Course is a 12-week online program exploring AI policy and governance. It’s open to policymakers, researchers, and tech professionals interested in understanding AI risks. Applications for the January 2025 cohort close January 5th.
Pivotal Research’s Q1 2025 Fellowship is a 9-week London-based program supporting early-career researchers in AI safety, governance, and biosecurity. It offers a £5,000 stipend, mentorship, and comprehensive support. The application deadline is November 21st.
Supervised Program Alignment Research (SPAR) Mentor Applications are now open for spring 2025. This remote AI safety research program seeks experienced researchers (grad students, academics, AI safety experts) to mentor 3-month projects. Applications close November 25th.
AutoHack’s Winter Tournament is accepting applications. AutoHack is a new platform that offers offensive security challenges modeled after real-world cybersecurity kill chains in order to empirically study AI systems’ capability in a realistic, diverse environment. Tournament participants will help stress-test this environment while competing for a $10K prize pool.
The AI for Animals 2025 Conference will take place on March 1–2, 2025, in Berkeley, CA. Topics will include the future of animal agriculture, interspecies communication, sentience research, and increasing animal consideration in frontier AI models. Early-bird tickets are available until December 1st and applications to speak are due by December 15th.

80,000 Hours
80,000 Hours published a blog post on why we get burned out — and what helps. They also released the final part in their biosecurity anonymous answers series: Could advances in AI supercharge biorisk?

ALLFED

Anima International
Anima International’s branch in Denmark is leading a coalition of 20+ Danish animal welfare organizations in advancing policy change around male chick culling in the egg industry. They’ve submitted research on alternatives, including in-ovo sexing technology, to the Food and Agricultural Administration. This will inform broader policy discussions aiming to ban the practice.
Also as a result of the organization’s work in Denmark, three Danish municipalities have committed to discontinue purchasing Ross 308 chickens — a breed of chicken raised for meat and genetically selected for unnaturally fast growth, which causes health issues and intense suffering for the animals.
Anima International’s team in France closed their plant-based outreach program and shifted to working on cage-free commitment implementation. This change is a result of a detailed evaluation process, and the main arguments for it were high tractability and importance of cage-free work in the context of the movement in Europe.
Jakub Stencel, the CEO of Anima International, was a guest on a recent episode of the How I Learned to Love Shrimp podcast. He talks about the organization’s culture of transparency, radical honesty, and constant learning.

Fish Welfare Initiative
Fish Welfare Initiative is seeking researchers, particularly in India, to submit proposals for their newly-launched RFP on Implementing Pre-Slaughter Stunning in India.
GiveWell
GiveWell recently launched a page on Metaculus — an online forecasting platform — to solicit external feedback on their research predictions. They will periodically post forecasts about GiveWell’s research and grants for the public to make their own predictions.
The deadline for comments is December 1st. Metaculus and other contributors will award $2,250 in prizes for insightful comments on a select group of forecasting questions.

New Incentives enrolled its four millionth infant and announced some exciting changes, including a vaccination completion incentive for caregivers, incentives for clinic staff, and malnutrition monitoring.
Open Philanthropy
Open Philanthropy launched a new cause area: Economic Growth in LMICs.
Longtime Open Philanthropy grantee David Baker won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Open Phil wrote about the work of Baker and his colleague, David King, in their blog.
Nicholas Kristof wrote about The Partnership for a Lead-Free Future — a joint initiative with funding from Open Philanthropy, USAID, the Gates Foundation, and others — in a New York Times op-ed.
The organization has compiled some of their key writings on AI over the last decade, featuring work from Ajeya Cotra, Joe Carlsmith, and others.
Inside Philanthropy profiled the org’s work to combat lead exposure, as well as their Global Health and Wellbeing portfolio more broadly.

Rethink Priorities
Oxford University Press published an open-access book edited by Rethink Priorities’ Bob Fischer, detailing the organization’s Moral Weight Project.
Rethink Priorities (RP) recently published several pieces, including privately commissioned reports and previews into their upcoming research. Their work addressed the following questions:
- Would the interventions available to help wild animals affect a large enough number of individuals to be cost-effective?
- What are the needs and goals of the animal advocacy movement according to the 2024 Animal Advocacy Strategy Forum?

The Humane League
After fierce pressure from Open Wing Alliance activists around the world, Japanese mayo juggernaut Kewpie committed to increase its cage-free egg usage to meet targets by 2027 and 2030. Responsible for purchasing 10% of all eggs in Japan, Kewpie’s commitment will inject rapid momentum to boost the cage-free market in Japan, a major global business hub and egg consumer. THL estimates that this victory will spare a minimum of 700,000 hens from suffering annually, once implemented.
In addition, THL pressured Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr — both owned by parent company CKE — to publicly report on their commitments to go cage-free in the US by 2025. Hardee’s announced that it is 40% cage-free, meaning over 345,000 hens have been spared from cages in 2024, while Carl’s Jr. announced that it has reached 100% cage-free, sparing an estimated 507,000 hens from cages annually.
