Hi,

I'm working in a decentralised Twitter clone aligned with EA goals.

About

Right now, you can create post, threads, prediction markets and send a crypto token with value just by mentioning a user.

We're organising some games like this run bet https://nmkbs-aaaaa-aaaam-aadfa-cai.ic0.app/post/833#main and planning to send fees/funds to a charity.

Eventually, the architecture will be as decentralised as possible.

You can see here a demo https://nmkbs-aaaaa-aaaam-aadfa-cai.ic0.app/

Questions

1- Apart from polishing and keep adding twitter features, which extra features would you like to see in this EA aligned social network?

2- Do you have an idea of which general principles should I use to make it more aligned with EA?

3- Finally, I would like to get ideas about where to apply to get extra funding to accelerate development.

Thank you in advance for your help and kindness :).

You can follow us at @SeerMarkets in Twitter.

Marcio.

I'd be excited for features that promote good epistemics, including:

  • Interactivity on the site
    • Being able to enter prediction markets without leaving the page you're on
    • better polls than twitter
  • Promoting social / gamified regular challenges
    • Forecasting
    • BOTECs / Fermis
    • Good tweet/thread-length explanations of tricky ideas
    • Hypothesis generation
      • What should Putin do / why is he doing this?
      • How should sex ed get taught?
      • What funding models are possible besides the ones we have? For science, for EA projects, other?
      • How much math should be taught in schools?
      • What different models of mental health are there?
    • Babble challenges e.g. https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/pDkZitYsJAwf8mHKJ/babble-challenge-50-ways-of-sending-something-to-the-moon
    • Encouraging a sprint of learning a new thing
      • Using squiggle for the first time
      • Writing your first short form
      • Making your first tiktok
      • etc
  • Promoting regular reflections
    • What am I not currently taking seriously?
    • What am I confused about?
    • Examples of propagation of beliefs to other beliefs / actions
  • Promoting independent thinking
    • How much do you currently buy longtermism? What are some cruxes?
    • Which of the new cause areas are you most excited about?
    • etc

I agree with Chana, and would like an app that draws you through this process.

Agree, we're very much looking to create a social network that improves though process. We choose twitter as a starting point because it has a nice structure (trees/forest) and we plan to modify it to improve critical thinking.

I would love if you could expand a bit on the "interactivity" items, since is the one that we can handle more immediately. Thanks

So, being able to enter your prediction on prediction markets without leaving the page you're on, being able to put an answer to a fermi or other kind of question but behind a spoiler tag, being able to collect a bunch of answers to a question (like this question post does), being able to comment on or collaborate on threads, maybe being able to fork threads the way you would have gone. Does  that gesture at the kinds of things I want?

Yes, and it sounds very aligned to what we have in mind.

There is a old post quite similar to my question:

 https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/JPfrT4AJNSadLQCPr/what-twitter-fixes-should-we-advocate-now-that-elon-is-on#YonyrBokWKCxGqJib

I would like the ability to control what I see and make it show me things I like again on my main timeline at some future time. Kind of twitter meets anki.

That sounds easy to implement. Definitely we're going to give users many choices regarding feed algorithms and they are going to be able to plug any custom one.

Some extra questions to think about or just have fun:

1 - Should the feed promote EA aligned posts over others?

2- Should we optimise for active users? Number of posts? Happiness?

3- Should it be running in a centralised server (like EA forum?) or in a decentralised way?

4- What should be the role of crypto inside the social network, if any?

5 - Should users control the network by coin voting?

6- Should users be able to fork the network and quickly create a spin-off?

7 - How should it create revenue and re-direct it to altruistic causes?

I hope is enough to kick start some conversation as I believe having a better social networks and aligned to EA values is vital.

[Cross-posted from my Substack here] If you spend time with people trying to change the world, you’ll come to an interesting conundrum: Various advocacy groups reference previous successful social movements as to why their chosen strategy is the most important one. Yet, these groups often follow wildly different strategies from each other to achieve social change. So, which one of them is right? The answer is all of them and none of them. This is because many people use research and historical movements to justify their pre-existing beliefs about how social change happens. Simply, you can find a case study to fit most plausible theories of how social change happens. For example, the groups might say: * Repeated nonviolent disruption is the key to social change, citing the Freedom Riders from the civil rights Movement or Act Up! from the gay rights movement. * Technological progress is what drives improvements in the human condition if you consider the development of the contraceptive pill funded by Katharine McCormick. * Organising and base-building is how change happens, as inspired by Ella Baker, the NAACP or Cesar Chavez from the United Workers Movement. * Insider advocacy is the real secret of social movements – look no further than how influential the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights was in passing the Civil Rights Acts of 1960 & 1964. * Democratic participation is the backbone of social change – just look at how Ireland lifted a ban on abortion via a Citizen’s Assembly. * And so on… To paint this picture, we can see this in action below: Source: Just Stop Oil which focuses on…civil resistance and disruption Source: The Civic Power Fund which focuses on… local organising What do we take away from all this? In my mind, a few key things: 1. Many different approaches have worked in changing the world so we should be humble and not assume we are doing The Most Important Thing 2. The case studies we focus on are likely confirmation bias, where

Are you looking for a project where you could substantially improve indoor air quality, with benefits both to general health and reducing pandemic risk? I've written a bunch about air purifiers over the past few years, and its frustrating how bad commercial market is. The most glaring problem is the widespread use of HEPA filters. These are very effective filters that, unavoidably, offer significant resistance to air flow. HEPA is a great option for filtering air in single pass, such as with an outdoor air intake or a biosafety cabinet, but it's the wrong set of tradeoffs for cleaning the air that's already in the room. Air passing through a HEPA filter removes 99.97% of particles, but then it's mixed back in with the rest of the room air. If you can instead remove 99% of particles from 2% more air, or 90% from 15% more air, you're delivering more clean air. We should compare in-room purifiers on their Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), not whether the filters are HEPA. Next is noise. Let's say you do know that CADR is what counts, and you go looking at purifiers. You've decided you need 250 CFM, and you get something that says it can do that. Except once it's set up in the room it's too noisy and you end up running it on low, getting just 75 CFM. Everywhere I go I see purifiers that are either set too low to achieve much or are just switched off. High CADR with low noise is critical. Then consider filter replacement. There's a competitive market for standardized filters, where most HVAC systems use one of a small number of filter sizes. Air purifiers, though, just about always use their own custom filters. Some of this is the mistaken insistence on HEPA filters, but I suspect there's also a "cheap razors, expensive blades" component where manufacturers make their real money on consumables. Then there's placement. Manufacturers put the buttons on the top and send air upwards, because they're designing them to sit on the floor. But a purifier on the floor takes up

Citation: McKay, H. and Shah, S. (2025). Forecasting farmed animal numbers in 2033. Rethink Priorities. The report is also available on the Rethink Priorities website. Executive summary We produced rough-and-ready forecasts of the number of animals farmed in 2033 with the aim of helping advocates and funders with prioritization decisions. We focus on the most numerous groups of farmed animals: broiler chickens, finfishes, shrimps, and select insect species. Our forecasts suggest almost 6 trillion of these animals could be slaughtered in 2033 (Figure 1).   Figure 1: Invertebrates could account for 95% of farmed animals slaughtered in 2033 according to our midpoint estimates. Note that ‘Insects’ only includes black soldier fly larvae and mealworms. Our midpoint estimates point to a potential fourfold increase in the number of animals slaughtered from 2023 to 2033 and a doubling of the number of animals farmed at any time. Invertebrates drive the majority of this growth, and could account for 95% of farmed animals slaughtered in 2033 (see Figure 1) and three quarters of those alive at any time in our mid-point projections. We believe our forecasts point to an urgent need to address critical questions around the sentience and welfare of farmed invertebrates. Our estimates come with many caveats and warnings. In particular: * Species scope: For practicality, we produced numbers only for a few key animal groups: broiler chickens, finfishes, shrimp, and certain insects (black soldier flies and mealworms only). * Sensitivity to insect farming growth: Our forecasts are particularly sensitive to the growth in insect farming, which is highly sensitive to the success of insect farming business models and their ability to attract future investment. The recent and forecasted estimates, with 90% subjective credible intervals, can be viewed below in Table 1.  Table 1: Estimates of recent and forecasted numbers of broiler chickens, finfishes, shrimps, and insects slau
