• Niger: After conducting audience research with ~1,000 potential listeners, we’re airing on 22 stations reaching ~444,040 potential listeners across three regions
• Benin and Togo: We completed successful proofs of concept, FEM’s first radio broadcasts in both countries. In Benin, we received IRB approval for audience research and conducted data collection. 

We’re currently fundraising to deliver campaigns in Nigeria and Togo, conduct an additional proof of concept in 2026, and strengthen the evidence needed for future scale.

Fish Welfare Initiative Updates

• Satellite-based water quality monitoring: After two years of extensive effort, we have failed to develop sufficiently accurate technology, and are thus pausing development on this intervention for now.
• Water quality ranges updates: We recently conducted a literature review of the ideal water quality ranges for Indian major carps, and made slight changes to our standards.
• Hiring: We are likely going to be hiring for an entry-level operations associate shortly. We think an EA-minded recent graduate could be a good fit for this role. We are favoring applicants in Asia, but wherever you are based if you think you could be a good fit we encourage you to reach out.

GFI Europe Mid-Year Impact Update

GFI Europe recently published its 2026 Mid-Year Impact Update, highlighting progress across policy, science, and industry during the first half of the year. The update covers work to generate evidence for policymakers, connect researchers and companies to solve technical bottlenecks, and support businesses as they scale alternative proteins across Europe.
 

Food biomanufacturing and national security

GFI and the National Defense Industrial Association's Emerging Technologies Institute published a new research brief examining the national security implications of food biomanufacturing. The brief was launched at a Washington, D.C. convening attended by food biomanufacturing companies and representatives from 11 U.S. federal offices, followed by meetings with congressional offices.

The report argues that food biomanufacturing can strengthen domestic supply chains, reduce dependence on vulnerable agricultural inputs, and position alternative proteins within broader U.S. biotechnology and manufacturing priorities.
 

Open-access roadmap for cultivated seafood research

GFI published Developing Continuous Cell Lines for Cultivated Seafood, a new technical guide to help researchers establish continuous cell lines for fish and crustaceans. Developed with scientists from across the field, the guide brings together practical recommendations and troubleshooting advice in a single open-access resource.

Reliable cell lines remain a key technical bottleneck for cultivated seafood. By making this knowledge openly available, GFI aims to reduce duplicated effort and lower barriers for new researchers entering the field.
 

First novel mycoprotein authorised in the EU

The European Commission has authorised The Protein Brewery's Fermotein under the EU Novel Food Regulation, making it the first newly authorised mycoprotein that can now be sold across all 27 EU Member States.

This is an important milestone for alternative proteins in Europe and may help establish regulatory precedent for future mycoprotein applications.

The Multi-Generational Kitchen

Research updates

Our research runs across two streams — the Model Personas agenda (empirical) and Safe Pareto Improvements (conceptual). Below we share progress on each from the first half of the year; for the bigger picture, see our research overview here.

Model Personas agenda

In the first half of the year, our empirical stream has continued the focus on the Model Personas Agenda. This has led to the following publications, in chronological order:

1. Conditionalization Confounds Inoculation Prompting Results
2. Concrete research ideas on AI personas
3. Shaping the exploration of the motivation-space matters for AI safety (led by Maxime Riché with external collaborators)
4. Inoculation Adapters Improve Upon Inoculation Prompting
5. Value Leakage: An LLM's Answers Are Silently Shaped by Its Own Values (led by Jan Betley and Johannes Treutlein from Truthful AI with contributions from Niels Warncke)

The focus area of these publications is selective generalization of personality traits. We have recently decided to narrow down our focus on malevolent personas specifically and are planning to share an updated agenda soon.

In addition to these publications, we have participated as mentors in SPAR and led 3 projects with a total of 15 mentees on studying empirical patterns of out-of-distribution generalization, creating a benchmark for selective learning techniques, and improving inoculation prompting. All projects are expected to result in forthcoming publications.

In the team, we have had the following changes:

1. Daniel Tan has been on a sabbatical to work with Arcadia Impact’s Alignment team since May, which may be extended to a permanent position.
2. We are very excited that Vili Kohonen joined the team in June.

Safe Pareto Improvements agenda

In February, we hosted a workshop on proposals for how AI companies might make the implementation of safe Pareto improvements (SPIs) more likely. Attendees from outside CLR gave important feedback on these proposals — particularly on the importance of more conceptual deconfusion and evaluating models for unambiguously bad behaviors — and developed other ideas for how to make SPIs go well.

We incorporated this feedback into a new research agenda on SPIs, which we published in April. Since then, we’ve made progress on each of the agenda’s three streams (evals, conceptual deconfusion, and research automation):

1. Evals: We posted a brief report on our initial work evaluating models for willingness to make commitments that unwisely lock out SPIs.
2. Conceptual deconfusion: We’ve written resources on the general frames that we find helpful for thinking clearly about the game theory of SPIs (this post and a draft of a forthcoming post).
3. Research automation: We’re building a benchmark for comprehension of and reasoning about SPIs.

However, progress is bottlenecked by our very limited capacity on this agenda, so we’ve recently focused on ways to build capacity, like our SPI Fundamentals Program.

SPI Fundamentals Program

To support the new SPI agenda, we are running an SPI Fundamentals Program this August (with applications closing on July 24).

We think SPIs are one of the most robust levers against catastrophic AI conflict, and this program aims to build a pipeline of people working on them.

1. What it is: A 4-week online course (Aug 3–28), ~5-7 hrs/week. Weekly readings, exercises, Slack discussion, and office hours with Anthony DiGiovanni, who leads CLR's SPI agenda. The final week splits into a conceptual and an empirical stream, and there's an optional paid capstone project the week after (Aug 31 - Sep 4). we plan to hire for SPI research roles, so this doubles as a fit test.
2. Who it's for: People considering a career in AI conflict reduction, or those in adjacent areas (cooperative AI, agent foundations) who want conflict risk to inform their existing work. Useful backgrounds include game theory, math, econ, decision theory, formal philosophy, CS, or theoretical physics, but no expertise required. No prior engagement with CLR's research needed.

Our Summer Research Fellowship program started in June with 8 fellows.

Ching Lam Choi is working on safe Pareto improvements with external mentor Nathaniel Sauerberg.

Cadence James is working on s-risk macrostrategy.

Research Affiliate program

In June we launched the Research Affiliates program. Research Affiliates will work autonomously on s-risk areas such as:

1. New research agendas that fall outside CLR’s current focus areas, and other high-upside research bets that need time to develop.
2. Automating or accelerating conceptual research.
3. Topics adjacent to our core agendas where the Affiliate has strong independent views or expertise.

We’re interested in taking on more Affiliates and have a form to express interest here.

• We published this piece about our pilot to increase childhood vaccination rates in Nigeria.
• We shared this piece looking at what the World Cup revealed about global health inequality.

Update on our UK chicken welfare campaign

As we reported last month, we launched one of our biggest and most ambitious campaigns to date, targeting the UK sandwich chain Pret A Manger, after it broke its 2018 commitment to stop selling fast-growing chickens by 2026. Instead of working with us to take concrete steps towards this goal, Pret has pushed the deadline to 2032 with no interim steps until 2031, leading us to conclude that it had no intention of delivering on the commitment.

The initial campaign activity has centred on a giant animatronic "Frankenwrap" sculpture – a car-sized frankenchicken replica stuffed inside a Pret wrap. The actions have gone viral as we continue to tour Pret cafes in London reaching out to the public. Alongside newspaper ads, celebrity endorsement, and ads on the London Underground courtesy of Project Slingshot, the campaign has amassed around 20M social media views, viral Reddit posts, and over 150 media appearances including The Times, The Guardian's Photo Of The Day, and LBC Radio.

Four weeks in, 70k people have signed our pledge to “take a break from Pret” until it produces a credible plan to phase out fast-growing chickens bred to suffer.

EU animal welfare policy: 5 years since the EU pledge to ban cages, new Livestock Strategy released.

On June 30th, Anima International on behalf of the End the Cage Age coalition staged a visual action outside the European Commission building in Brussels to mark exactly five years since the Commission’s public commitment to proposing EU-wide legislation banning cages for farmed animals.

Alongside the animal advocacy groups gathered at the event, seven MEPs from six member countries attended and spoke in support. The action was also noticed by the Health and Animal Welfare Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, as well as the Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen.

Since the action, the EC has released a new Livestock Strategy, which outlines the timeline for proposing new animal welfare legislation:

• end of 2026: phasing-out of cages for egg-laying hens, ending the systematic killing of male chicks and equivalent import requirements
• Q1 of 2027: transition from crates to pen systems for pig farming

The legislation, when introduced, will improve the lives of around 160 million animals confined in cages, and prevent the suffering of around 330 million day-old chicks per year in the EU alone.
