Senior software developer on Chemonics' global-health supply chain branch. Chemonics was the largest US government global health procurement & logistics contractor.
-I saved Chemonics over $500,000 in software, outsourcing, & labor costs by building & implementing order approval & invoicing systems.
-For a couple years every USAID / State Department health commodity order & supplier invoice has been processed in systems I built.
-I am currently working on inventory management (+demand planning), EDI (automated purchase orders, invoices, packing lists, proof of deliveries, etc. between orgs), & invoicing systems for use in routine global health procurement & logistics that would likely also be used for pandemic vaccines and my employer will market these systems to the UN agencies & individual country governments.
After the events of:
-Abrupt & unlawful destruction of USAID & continual withholding of congressionally mandated global health funds leading to at least hundreds of thousands of deaths.
-Slowing of economic growth / economic development / poverty alleviation with tariffs.
-The execution in the street of Alex Pretti.
-The siding with Putin, who is facilitating the killing of US service members, and the resulting slaughter of more Ukrainian civilians and the likely extension of the Ukraine war along with the extension of all its risks for WWIII.
It may be time to add a supplementary dimension to what people choose to fund & work on. The fossil fuel industry, farmers / ranchers, car dealerships / auto-repair, trucking, & construction industry all lean heavily MAGA and have available / upcoming technology & process changes that could reduce the MAGA lean of the industry or that could reduce the number of people required in those industries. And some of these also overlap with other goals like reducing animal suffering, climate change mitigation, reducing the cost of housing, etc.
Like:
-Alternative proteins & lab grown meat & precision fermentation to reduce animal meat consumption & all the extra farming required for the animal feed.
-Autonomous tractors / drones / robotics for things like tilling / spraying / picking / etc.
-Driverless trucking.
-Direct to consumer EV sales which would avoid dealerships, lower car repair needs with EVs, & lower fossil fuel needs.
-Solar & battery improvements to reduce energy costs, reduce fossil fuel needs, & give poorer countries better electricity options.
-Displace most fossil fuels with synthetic fuels made from solar energy, air, & water (https://caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/2023/06/27/the-terraformer-mark-one/) and (https://terraformindustries.wordpress.com/2026/06/16/the-enormous-size-of-the-oil-and-gas-market-drives-adoption-of-synthetic-fuel-production/).
-More factory-built homes / automated & streamlined construction.

Also I’m not sure if anyone specifically in the EA space is working on it yet, but there is a case for government e-procurement development in low & middle income countries saving a lot of money & reducing corruption.
https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-benefit-cost-analysis/article/investment-case-for-egovernment-procurement-a-costbenefit-analysis/1BC5D35109D488269F4C8F3E95C0B714
But it is still dependent on like a Minister of Finance & others willing to implement it & reduce the corruption in their domain.
Updated the post with new instructions after finding out the credits expire before the next automatic monthly donation.
-The 1st $10 monthly donation will cost $7 with $3 in credits from the 3 likes & you get 5 credits for using your bank (watch out it looks like they set the credits to expire before your next monthly donation).
-Do a one-time 5 bank credit.
-On the 2nd 10 but you get another 10 donation with the $10 recurring donation credit.
-Cancel your monthly donations.
Btw until July 3 there is a matching campaign for Animal Charity Evaluators if you wanted to swap donations with someone who can donate to that
https://animalcharityevaluators.org/bulldog/
Note you can also donate to Screwworm Free Future for the chance at helping to avoid extreme suffering for 30+million animals per year.
It’s a more speculative & risky donation but if one thinks their marginal dollars have a chance to speed up elimination by even 2-3 years then it is like 100 animals avoiding extreme suffering for every $1 donated.
https://www.every.org/screwworm-free-futureÂ
The potential effectiveness of such donations may put you over the threshold of making the job worth it.
Any potential for/tracking of people volunteering their time to projects?
For example I am a software developer employed at a global health logistics org & I already have a personal Claude subscription with spare capacity that my work reimburses me for. I may be looking for extra projects and/or open-source builds to work on soon.
I’d like to point out that all EA programs working on common neglected diseases are pushing systemic change.
One of the most cited Acemoglu theories of economic development gives evidence that rates of settler mortality were much higher in some areas due to things like Malaria & that this encouraged the development of extractive colonialist institutions, whereas the places with lower settler mortality saw more people move to those places to live long term & develop inclusive institutions that increase growth & wellbeing.
Okay @danielyu & @Arno what about the secondary part of this with the Atlas Of Economic Complexity resources?
Wouldn’t it be helpful to use some of these tools/data to come up with the highest potential impact ventures to support?Â
Like maybe one could look for what African countries have the highest similarity scores / adjacent capabilities to start building more generics pharmaceutical industries to support the region’s global health goals.
Or what countries may be most able to develop very low-cost meat alternatives / plant-based protein products for better animal welfare?
Like are there opportunities for donors to support both private business in low income countries & other high impact cause areas simultaneously?
Thanks for the clarification. I’ve had a curiosity if these types of logistics developments would have a significant impact, but had yet to run into anyone with good context to give a rough check / back-of-the-envelope potential impact calculation.
