EA spends a great deal of effort asking which causes, interventions, and careers have the greatest impact. We spend much less time systematically asking which general-purpose skills make us better at answering those questions—and better at acting on the answers.
Why focus on transferable skills?
Reasoning under uncertainty, evaluating evidence, learning efficiently, communicating clearly, coordinating people, and revising beliefs affect performance across almost every role and cause area. They also have unusually broad and compounding value: improving one of these capabilities can influence hundreds of later decisions rather than a single task.
Transferable skills also preserve option value. They remain useful when priorities, organisations, or career paths change, and they make it easier to acquire specialised knowledge later. I therefore think of them not as generic self-improvement, but as part of the infrastructure required to do other valuable work well.
Yet self-directed education is usually organised around subjects—economics, psychology, history, public policy—rather than around the capabilities that determine how effectively we understand and apply subject-specific knowledge.
This post is an attempt to organise learning in the opposite direction: begin with a map of broadly transferable skills, then identify one strong primary book for developing each of them.
Why I think this may be worthwhile
I have already read eight of the books included in this curriculum, and several have been among the most valuable books I have ever read. They have meaningfully changed how I learn, organise my work, communicate, and make decisions. That experience is part of what convinced me that a more systematic approach could be worth pursuing.
The goal is not simply to read widely. For each book, I intend to:
- create spaced-repetition cards
- extract practical frameworks, distinctions, and decision rules
- apply selected ideas in professional, organisational, and personal situations
- gradually integrate overlapping insights into a coherent personal toolkit.
Selection criteria
This is not intended as a definitive canon. It is a working curriculum designed around four main criteria:
- broad transferability across roles and contexts
- practical applicability, rather than intellectual interest alone
- epistemic quality, including the quality of the underlying evidence
- limited redundancy with the rest of the curriculum.
Where two books covered a similar area, I generally selected the one that seemed more actionable, more foundational, or more complementary to the rest of the list. In a few unusually important areas—particularly learning how to learn—I think reading a second, complementary book is justified.
Epistemic status
I am moderately confident in the overall map of skills and less confident in some individual book selections.
Reading and spaced repetition are not substitutes for direct practice, particularly for interpersonal and performance-based skills such as negotiation, public speaking, coaching, facilitation, and conflict management. Conceptual knowledge can improve attention, diagnosis, and preparation, but competence ultimately requires application and feedback.
My aim is therefore to use books as a foundation for better real-world learning, rather than assume that familiarity with a framework is equivalent to possessing the skill.
I. Understanding reality and reasoning
1. Argument analysis and construction
A Rulebook for Arguments — Anthony Weston
- Skill: Identifying claims, premises, hidden assumptions and logical gaps, while constructing arguments whose conclusions are genuinely supported.
- Key ideas: A compact set of rules for arguments based on examples, analogy, authority and causal reasoning, together with methods for testing and improving weak arguments.
2. Evaluating sources and evidence

- Skill: Determining whether a claim is supported by reliable evidence rather than selective data, impressive language or borrowed scientific authority.
- Key ideas: How to detect misleading comparisons, cherry-picking, distorted visualisations, publication bias, weak metrics and claims dressed up with numbers or technical terminology.
3. Quantitative and statistical thinking

- Skill: Interpreting averages, distributions, samples, correlations and uncertainty without being misled by intuitive but incorrect conclusions.
- Key ideas: How statistical questions are framed, how data are generated and analysed, and how results should be interpreted and communicated.

- Skill: Estimating what is likely to happen, expressing uncertainty numerically and improving the calibration of predictions over time.
- Key ideas: Using base rates, decomposing complex questions, updating beliefs incrementally and checking whether confidence levels correspond to actual accuracy.
5. Causal reasoning

- Skill: Distinguishing genuine causes from correlations and reasoning about what would have happened under different conditions or interventions.
- Key ideas: Causal models, confounding variables, interventions and counterfactual reasoning.

- Skill: Understanding how outcomes emerge from feedback loops, delays, constraints and adaptation rather than from isolated causes.
- Key ideas: Stocks and flows, reinforcing and balancing feedback, system resilience, policy resistance and leverage points.
7. Belief revision and epistemic humility

- Skill: Seeking an accurate view of reality rather than defending beliefs because they support identity, status or emotional comfort.
- Key ideas: Recognising motivated reasoning, testing openness to evidence, calibrating confidence and making it psychologically easier to change one’s mind.

8. Self-directed learning

- Skill: Designing and carrying out ambitious self-directed learning projects.
- Key ideas: How to identify the structure of a skill, focus directly on the performance one wants to improve, isolate weaknesses, retrieve knowledge actively, obtain fast feedback and experiment with different learning methods.
- Additional note: Learning how to learn is unusually high-leverage, so this is one of the few areas where I think a second book is clearly justified. Make It Stick — Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III and Mark A. McDaniel — provides the stronger research-based foundation on retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving and long-term retention.
9. Skill acquisition and deliberate practice
Peak — Anders Ericsson and Robert Pool
- Skill: Improving performance by identifying specific weaknesses, practising at the edge of current ability and using precise feedback.
- Key ideas: Mental representations, purposeful practice, expert coaching and the difference between repetition and genuine training.
10. Analytical reading
How to Read a Book — Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren
- Skill: Reconstructing a book’s structure, central questions, arguments and conclusions instead of collecting disconnected interesting points.
- Key ideas: Inspectional and analytical reading, identifying an author’s terms and propositions, evaluating arguments and comparing several books around one question.

This curriculum is intentionally broad. Its aim is not mastery of every skill, but the development of a stronger general-purpose toolkit for reasoning, learning, communicating and organising action.
The main risk is confusing familiarity with competence. For many of these skills—particularly negotiation, public speaking, coaching, conflict management and leadership—reading should be treated as preparation for practice rather than as practice itself.
The list should also be viewed as a first version rather than a finished canon. In some cases, a course, workshop, simulation, coaching process, or structured practice programme may produce greater skill development per hour invested than the selected book. A future version could replace individual books where a clearly better learning resource exists.
I would especially value feedback on:
- books that are suboptimal choices
- skills that should be merged or divided differently
- unnecessary overlap between entries
- resources that are too theoretical to meaningfully affect behaviour
- cases where another learning format would be more effective than the selected book.
