The Board of Effective Altruism UK is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Director, Gergő Gáspár.

EA UK works to support and strengthen the effective altruism community across the UK, helping people increase their impact. Gergő joins EA UK at a time when there is growing demand for strong infrastructure to support the UK EA ecosystem.

Background

Gergő’s academic background is in psychology, and he has been working in community building and fieldbuilding roles since 2019. He began by organising a university group called EA ELTE, which later grew into EA Budapest and eventually into EA Hungary, a national group. He moved into full-time community building work in 2021 as this work scaled. In 2022, he founded AI Safety Hungary.

For the past two years, Gergő has also been a part-time Director at the European Network for AI Safety (ENAIS), working on coordination and capacity-building across Europe. In parallel, he co-founded Amplify, an EA-aligned digital marketing agency focused on supporting fieldbuilding organisations. He also writes a Substack called Building Capacity, which focuses on fieldbuilding strategy, careers, and marketing in EA and adjacent spaces.

Earlier in his career, Gergő was a volunteer charity analyst and analysis coordinator at SoGive, and he has experience with academic research in psychology.

Focus at EA UK

As Director of EA UK, Gergő will focus on strengthening organisational and ecosystem-level capacity, and on ensuring that EA UK operates effectively within the broader UK and global EA ecosystem.

A note from Gergő

I’m really excited to be starting this role. I recently moved to London, and it’s been amazing being surrounded by so many thoughtful and committed people. I’m looking forward to learning quickly, listening carefully, and working to strengthen EA UK’s capacity and impact.

I’ve recently written about what I see as a big-picture strategy for local and national EA groups. My priority over the coming months will be to operationalise relevant of this thinking in the UK context. To help this process, I’m keen to speak with a wide range of stakeholders.
