I very much agree subjective probabilities should be sharp. So I am not concerned about the unawareness argument for "no impartial altruistic justification for preferring any action over another", which relies on unsharp probabilities.
It doesn’t follow from “we don’t know the net direction of the consequences we’re unaware of” that we should regard the positives and negatives as precisely symmetric. One reason symmetry is implausible: If we become aware of a new possible consequence, this should update our beliefs about the others we’re unaware of, breaking the symmetry.
That's great news. You're saying that we have information about which direction our estimates are biased? Then cluelessness is false! We should update our estimates in the direction indicated by the information we become aware of, making a new, more accurate estimate, and act upon that.
I'm not saying we have information that updates us in a particular direction about the bias. I'm saying we have information suggesting various different directions, and it's ambiguous what the update should be overall — which is fundamentally different from "no update". I strongly recommend reading sections 2.1 and 2.4 of this post, as well as 3.2.1 of this post, to understand the epistemology that's at play here.

As I said before, I think my biggest personal crux are the proposed downside risks (e.g. commitment races) of "promote wisdom, cooperation, altruism, etc" - I thought about them for a little bit and took some notes when i last read about it, but I remain skeptical that they can outweigh the intuitive upside. (I guess this is P3? But I'm not sure). Maybe I could write my thinking up at some point.

The short answer is that if cluelessness is true you aren't justified in doing what you'd do if it wasn't true. You can still do it, but you aren't being responsive to the right reasons.
But that's false. If cluelessness is true, then you can't tell what you should do in that case. But you still know what you should do in the case where cluelessness is false (at least, as well as you did before hearing the cluelessness argument) so you should do whatever you were going to do anyway. So the justified action is still the same as before, but with lower confidence.
This wouln't be the case if you're 100% certain that cluelessness is true, but if cluelessness is true then it's not justified to be 100% confident that cluelessness is true.

But it's not answered there. If you're pointing at the thing about how UEV isn't a point estimate but a range, that's still irrelevant: even if true, the preferred action is still decided by the scalar value that comes from taking your probability-weighted expectation of that range.

I'm pointing out that if you can't do that, then cluelessness doesn't support any claims that any other action (besides the highest-EV action based on the premise that you can assign a non-arbitrary probability-weighted expectation) is higher-EV, so you should do the previously-chosen highest-EV action anyway. Conveniently, it's not necessary to justify it and try to increase anyone's credence that it's true, because the alternative doesn't affect what decision they should make, so they should behave as if it's true regardless of the probability, anywhere from 0 to 100%.

Cluelessness makes the belief that the preferred action has good consequences weaker, but it doesn't raise any other action above the otherwise-preferred action in terms of expected consequences. So it's irrelevant to decision-making, and you should still do whatever you were going to do anyway.

Are you assuming that the previously preferred action would still have some normative force behind it? I think that's the bit that's confusing me. The cluelessness argument (if it goes through - idk if it does or not, hence competition) attacks your reasons for preferring that action, so you're back to the drawing board. It doesn't make much sense to still insist on the action when you find out that your reasons for preferring it are flawed.

There's some level of credence in cluelessness. The worst case for your otherwise-preferred action is when p(cluelessness)=100%. In that case it doesn't matter what you do.

I think we'll end up going in circles - my point is that cluelessness is a problem with the reasoning that gets you to your preferred action, so if it is true, then the reasoning is faulty and the preference is unjustified.
Also, since you can still have preferences if you believe in cluelessness, I don't quite know how you'd compare between your preference to act deontologically in cluelessness world and your preference to maximise impartial welfare in non-clueless world. Both would be good preferences in their respective worlds. IDK how the meta-normative comparison should go here.

To decide whether you should act based on your cluelessness world preferences or your non-cluelessness world preferences, you'd have to use evidence (either empirical or theoretical) for which world you're in.
But an ordinary consequentialist decision-making process would already take this evidence into account. (I think cluelessness-believers sometimes strawman cluelessness-skeptics and assume that they haven't thought of this or wouldn't update on such evidence.)

If cluelessness is correct then you also can't justifiably believe that rules like avoiding dishonesty or virtues like compassion matter, or are good to embody. For all you know, telling the truth in your personal life will cause there to be more dishonesty everywhere else in the universe, so you ought to lie instead.
But that's obviously ridiculous, for the same reason that the cluelessness argument against impartial altruism is ridiculous.
Not quite - the idea is that we run into the cluelessness objection when we act for impartial altruistic reasons. Deontological reasoning, and virtue ethics reasoning are different in that when we reason that way, we aren't making claims about consequences.
If you want to care about the long-run impartial consequences of your actions, then you need to answer Anthony's argument, either by rejecting it for a specific reason, or finding a way to reason about impartially altruistic actions without running into the problems he outlines.

I’d like to elicit direct, productive critiques of the argument for cluelessness from my sequence on “unawareness”, which I’ll call the unawareness argument.
To that end, this post will:
Here’s a new framing of the unawareness argument (compared to how I present it in the sequence). I expect this framing to help readers disentangle different types of disagreements they might have, corresponding to three different premises of the argument.
Roughly: What would justify preferring action A over B on impartial altruistic grounds? We’d need to “expect” that according to our epistemically idealized self, A has better expected total consequences across the cosmos (normative premise). But if our understanding of these actions’ consequences is too coarse, then we can’t say how our idealized self would compare their expected values (conceptual premise). And our understanding of any given action’s cosmos-wide consequences is in fact that coarse (empirical premise). So there’s no impartial altruistic justification for preferring any action over another.
More precisely:

Here’s a natural reaction to this argument: “If we’re clueless, nothing we do matters anyway. So there’s no point looking into the argument, and we should just act as if we aren’t clueless.”
But I don’t think it’s that simple. I’ll explain why, then say what kinds of “looking into the argument” I expect to have the highest value of information.

Third, relatedly, unawareness probably has some implications for impartial altruists, even if we don’t think it makes us clueless. There’s older work on crucial considerations, but I don’t think such work has rigorously fleshed out the implications much, relative to the scale of the problem. As an example of such an implication: Suppose we want to make forecasts about post-ASI civilization, but we’re worried that forecasting methods that worked well in better understood systems won’t generalize to this case. We could study various methods in domains with (e.g.) different frequencies of past crucial consideration discovery, and see which methods are relatively robust as the frequency of crucial considerations increases.[6]
Finally, if nothing else, it seems epistemically virtuous to be clear about the reasons for our decisions. Sure, perhaps there’s no behavioral difference between “I’m working on AI risk because I’ve really weighed up all the possible consequences, and it doesn’t seem arbitrary to say this work is impartially good ‘in expectation’”, and “I have no clue if my idealized self would favor working on AI risk, but I’m doing it because no one has offered something better”. But I think if we’re honest with ourselves that our reasoning is the latter, we’ll have more open minds if and when “something better” comes along.
So, if the unawareness argument is worth engaging with, what should we focus on when scrutinizing it? Going forward, I expect newer or sharper critiques of the normative premise, and part (b) of the conceptual premise, to be most productive. This is because:
