Announcements:

• A few weeks ago we announced our largest grant ever: $276 million, co-funded with GiveWell, to the Against Malaria Foundation. The grant will pay for bed nets in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where malaria remains one of the leading causes of death for young children.
• Amanda Glassman joined Coefficient Giving as Managing Director of Global Health and Development Policy, overseeing our Global Aid Policy and Global Growth funds.
• Anna Bershteyn joined Coefficient Giving as our new Managing Director of Science & Global Health R&D. In this role, she’ll lead our grantmaking on research and development of new tools against diseases that disproportionately affect the global poor.

• Emily Oehlsen, CG’s President, wrote that we're at a critical moment when transformative AI may arrive soon, and described how we're scaling our work on AI and biosecurity in response.
• Kearney Capuano and Melanie Basnak reflected on their first Effective Careers RFP, reporting that a surprising volume and quality of applications led them to fund far more than planned. They’ve awarded about $13 million to 28 organizations helping people transition into high-impact careers.
• Danny De La Torre wrote about the behaviors and habits that make a good Chief of Staff.
• Andrew Snyder-Beattie made the case that we could solve the vast majority of existential biological risk by ubiquitously deploying simple and cheap countermeasures like PPE, air filters, and UVC.
• Matt Clancy reviewed recent research showing that people who live through greater economic growth tend to have more trust in their government, higher support for democracy, and less zero-sum thinking.

We’ve released a major 2026 update to our Animal Product Impact Scales, the resource estimating how many animal lives and days of suffering lie behind different animal products. This update refreshes our U.S. estimates and, for the first time, adds U.K. data which tells a remarkably consistent story: chicken, fish, and eggs drive the most suffering per serving, while dairy remains lowest-impact. Executive Director’s Departure

After eight years with Faunalytics and more than six leading it, Executive Director Brooke Haggerty has announced she'll step down on January 15, 2027, sharing a heartfelt look back at how the organization grew from a team of four into a thriving staff of 13. She also writes candidly about the toll of nonprofit leadership and the case for better supporting advocates facing burnout. With a strong team, sound strategy, and healthy runway in place, Brooke explains why she's more confident than ever in Faunalytics' future—and the Board is now accepting applications for its next Executive Director through October 18th.

Fish Welfare Initiative Updates

• Expansion and Hiring: We recently published plans for international scoping to guide our future expansion. We are also hiring a Global Growth Manager to lead this.

  Lice study: We published initial results from our "sentinel pole" lice study, which uses in-water poles to detect lice eggs before the farmers otherwise would. Lice are a common parasite affecting farmed fishes.

• Monitoring and Evaluation: We published the most recent M&E report from our farm program in India.

Galicia backs alternative proteins in its new biotech strategy

The Regional Government of Galicia has published its updated Biotech Strategy for 2026–2030, committing €805 million to the region's biotech sector over the next four years. The strategy names agrifoodtech as a priority sector, specifically calling out alternative proteins as a key area to support. GFI Europe contributed to the public consultation on this strategy. 

Seeing alternative proteins recognised in this way is an encouraging step towards stronger policy and funding support in the years ahead, and it opens the door to closer engagement with regional decision-makers.
 

The Alt Protein Project welcomed 15 new groups to its global community 

The Alt Protein Project, GFI's global network of student-led groups, has welcomed 15 new chapters, including from the University of Helsinki and the University of Manchester. That brings the network to more than 80 active groups across 21 countries.

Supported by GFI experts, students lead great initiatives like helping create courses on alternative proteins, organising conferences, raising awareness and driving research; all of which help to build the next generation of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs working on alternative proteins.
 

Singapore has approved cultivated beef for commercial sale

In 2020, Singapore made history as the first country to approve the sale of cultivated meat. And now, Singapore has made history again by approving cultivated beef for commercial sale, developed by Aleph Farms. Conventional beef production is incredibly inefficient, requiring up to 100 calories of feed to produce just one calorie of beef. Singapore’s approval of cultivated beef is a significant milestone, and a clear example of what a supportive, forward-looking regulatory approach can make possible.
 

Biomass fermentation recognised as not 'ultra-processed' in the US

The Non-UPF Verified standard, a widely used standard for defining ultra-processed foods in the US, has been updated to recognise biomass fermentation as a permissible method of processing. GFI worked with the Fungi Protein Association to make the case for the change, which will mean these fermentation-derived products aren't unfairly caught by the growing scrutiny of ultra-processed foods.

Wild Animal Initiative is hiring a Philanthropy Officer to join our Development Team. This role will manage a portfolio of ~50–100 major donors, raising funds to help us accelerate wild animal welfare science by giving donors the information and analysis they need to understand and invest in our work.

We're not looking for candidates who have held a particular job title in the past; we're much more interested in finding someone with genuine roots in the effective altruism community. Strong candidates will have a proven history of building relationships across differences — using strategic judgment, clear reasoning, and scientific literacy to communicate their ideas.

Family Empowerment Media – On Air and About to Launch our RCT

Family Empowerment Media is an evidence-based nonprofit whose mission is to reduce unintended pregnancies and the maternal and child mortality and morbidity they can cause. We do this by enabling informed family planning decisions through clear, engaging, and accurate radio-based communication.

Our work is estimated to generate a Couple-Year of Protection (one year of contraceptive protection) for 7 USD, compared with GiveWell’s best-guess benchmark of 20 USD per CYP. Our model of reach and cost-effectiveness was independently validated by Rethink Priorities. 

Updates

• Our campaigns are on air in Kaduna, Nigeria, and Niger. We conducted formative research to produce a campaign in Benin (campaign production is next). Read more about current and upcoming campaigns in our latest blog. 
• Our RCT is launching. Baseline data collection for a randomised controlled trial begins this month for two-year campaigns across 11-13 states in Nigeria,. The first wave of the campaign will launch to 14.9 million potential listeners on Dec 1.
• Support Our Work. We’re currently fundraising to launch content production in Togo and for our RCT in Nigeria.
